This seminar presents the configuration and performance of different high purity germanium (HPGe) solutions for radionuclide measurement and identification in harsh environments. The first part of the seminar will describe a novel, ultra-miniature, electrically-cooled HPGe detector, designed for use in very tight spaces, as well as for field applications, such as nuclear material characterization, decommissioning, and high count-rate applications. The lightweight design and low power consumption makes it possible to mount the detector onto remote-controlled robotic platforms (terrestrial or aerial) in order to perform high resolution radiation measurements in highly contaminated areas. The second part will include other electrically-cooled solutions for specific environments, such as a sealed HPGe probe for borehole types of applications, as well as a submersible HPGe detector for water monitoring applications.
